Storytelling is at the heart of the photojournalistic approach to wedding photography, and part of that process is finding the details that set each and every couple apart. The JPG Photography team prides itself on highlighting the nuances of every couple’s journey. What we loved most about Kelly and Matt’s Collingswood Grand Ballroom wedding was that at several points the day was infused with their history, their roots, and the building blocks that brought them to their big day.
The first example of this was in Kelly’s getting ready session, which took place in her childhood home. We love the images of her preparing for her wedding in the rooms she had shared so many moments with her loved ones. The image of her stepping out of her suburban home as a beautiful bride ready to go makes you wonder how many other milestones, such as the first day of school or prom, were caught in the same spot.
Matt’s story was also captured in a special way. The ceremony took place at his childhood church and elementary school, St. Charles Borromeo in Cinnaminson. Getting shots of the groom with his life-long friends in the halls of their elementary school was already perfect, but finding his class photo from grade school still hanging on the wall was the icing on the cake! Matt is a swim instructor, and a sweet bonus was capturing all his students giving him their well wishes.
When we arrived at Collingswood Grand Ballroom, we snuck the couple away for a few shots in the Scottish Rite Auditorium. The open space and lovely architectural details made for a perfect alternative to outdoor portraits in the blazing summer heat. After the portrait session, it was time to party! Kelly and Matt had a special first dance which they began privately, their guests waiting behind curtains. Midway through the song, the curtains were drawn and cheers filled the room, adding an extra emotional punch to the moment. Since Kelly and Matt were referred to team JPG from another Liz and Jesse, another couple we photographed, we already knew many of the bridal party and guests. Having an established rapport allowed us to get close to capture the action, and the rest of the day was a breeze.
Kelly and Matt, we love that your day included so much of your personal story, and we know that it will continue with so many happy moments to come. Congratulations!
