Have I mentioned we love traveling? Well, we do! Just last week we flew to Houston for Jennifer and Josh’s engagement shoot and had the full Texas experience: barbeque, cowboy boots, barns, and fences. When we first arrived, we couldn’t resist taking some family shots at Jennifer’s parents’ home. It opens up to a gorgeous canal that provided a one-of-a-kind backdrop. We quickly found out that Jennifer’s mother loves taking pictures too! She has pictures of us taking pictures of her; even the family dog made it into a few shots. Speaking of shots, Jennifer and Josh showed us around a local bar called The Pastry War, which, contrary to popular belief, does not sell pastries. It was a beautiful space with handsome lights strung from the ceiling, making for dreamily lit pictures. Beyond the bar and the family home photos, we decided to take some pictures with the Houston skyline. Houston doesn’t have too many high rises, so it creates crisp lines without diminishing the Texas sky.
The following day, we experienced some genuine Texas cooking from Rudy’s Bar-B-Q! It was totally authentic with red-and-white checkered tablecloths over long wooden tables– the whole bit. We ordered beef brisket, pulled pork, and creamed corn (which was amazing, by the way!). Of course, there was nothing green in sight! Jennifer, being the Texan in the group, informed us that the way you know it’s good barbeque is when it doesn’t need any sauce at all and the meat stands on its own. I loved how much this couple loved to eat! We got some great shots of them digging into their food and simply enjoying each other’s company.
Jennifer and Josh took us to their wedding venue to shoot as well. I wish we had a venue like this in Philadelphia, but the space and atmosphere of Texas complimented it perfectly. Their ceremony space is right beside an enormous old oak tree wrapped in string lights, and the reception will be held in a barn– not a typical wedding venue barn, either. It was once a functional barn where animals were kept and grain was stored. The property also has a large pond that creates breathtaking reflections for photos, and Jennifer showed off her Texas roots by wearing cowgirl boots for the shoot!
This couple is authentic through and through, from their venue and food to their love for one another. We can’t wait to shoot their wedding this March, which, interestingly enough, is the height of wedding season further south. If you’re thinking of having a southern wedding, now is the time to book!
