Drone Photography for PHL Magazine

Last month, JPG was asked to document a new vision of a place already photographed millions of times. The Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau asked us to utilize drone photography technology to capture a unique view of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Photographing the parkway – which holds a great deal of historical meaning and has been the site of countless events for decades – presents a new challenge: we had to use our artistic vision and new technology to capture the vertical photo from the air with a camera which only shoots horizontally. Our photo that appears on the cover of the fall issue of the PHL Visitor’s Guide showcases a wide view from above the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, and stretches over the Parkway, all the way to the Philadelphia Art Museum which stands out in the background.
Here at JPG, we have two photographers with drone photography photography expertise. Needless to say, seeing the drone in action is an awesome sight. Art and technology come together seamlessly as the drone hovers high over the subject, while the operator controls it from a tablet on the ground. It’s a great way to separate yourself from the pack, by showcasing your work from a new angle that hasn’t been seen before!
Although this new technology is exciting, it does take careful planning and consideration to pull off. If you’re looking to have drone photography done, it’s important to check with us and the local policy that there are no legal boundaries being crossed. While we were on this shoot, we were stopped by undercover police and the Secret Service because the flying drone made them a little nervous with the upcoming Papal visit! Although we were treated very well for that hour of my life I’ll never get back, and enjoyed hanging out with Philadelphia’s law enforcement, being detained is not a usual part of our daily routine.
We love using drones to capture fun and unique angles– we even occasionally incorporate these type of photos into weddings and portraits. If you want to join in the fun, and geek out over some cool photography equipment, contact us today to inquire about pricing and availability for your own unique drone photos!
Best, Joe G.
