There aren’t too many weddings that I’m thrilled to drive into the backwoods of nowhere for. Blake and Michael are just one of those couples that were so sweet, they made it worth every second of the long journey into rural New Jersey.
We had the pleasure of shooting this fantastic gay couple at their woodsy bed & breakfast wedding that was full of so many incredible, intimate moments.
One of the things I love best is when couples get ready together. It’s quite rare. I just can’t explain how personal, and how much of a connection there is, when couples help each other look their best for one of the most important days of their lives.
Blake and Michael each had their own best man there to help as well. There are no words to describe what it was like to be in that room documenting their love, laughter and even a few crude personal jokes.
Their breathtaking ceremony was outdoors at the High Point Golf Club in Montague Township, New Jersey, set against the foliage with about 40 guests. There’s something so touching about having all of your wedding guests no more than 15 feet away from you during the ceremony. This is what intimate weddings are all about.
For photos of the couple, we walked around the adorable town of Milford and used the scenery there combined with the gorgeous sunset for some magical portraits. Next up, came a reception full of surprises at the Hotel Fauchere.
Blake and Michael, by far, had one of the most unique first dances I’ve ever seen. They choreographed it to Carmina Burana, which happens to be one of my favorite songs of all time.
Their dance also gave me a really interesting challenge as a photographer. We were in what was probably the tiniest room I’ve ever been in for a first dance. It was tough to squeeze everyone in, but we got some great photos. We were seriously almost on top of them. I felt like I was almost a part of their awesome dance because I just kept bumping into them.
In a wedding this small, you’re as much of a guest as you are a vendor and we just loved that. Congratulations to Blake and Michael on their truly beautiful day, letting us capture the union of their love and the brewery they’ve opened in their new life together.
Best, Joe G.
